Christmas Magic 2008 from 25 to 30 December 2008, 10:00 - 20:00

At the "Triberg Christmas Magic" from 25 - 30 December 2008, the visitors will experience a unique Christmas atmosphere directly at Germany's highest waterfalls. More than 300,000 lights mingling into a fantastic ocean of lights will create a cosy and homey atmosphere. Particularly at this time of the year, the Triberg Falls with all the ice and snow are a superb wonder of nature and thus an impressive setting for the "Christmas Magic" event in Triberg.

The guests can look forward to a fantastic programme with permanently changing shows and musical performances by national and international artists. One breath-taking event will be a spectacular show directly in the waterfalls. A real pleasure for eyes and ears. The alley of lights, a tunnel of lights with a length of 26 m with 50,000 small lamps as well as many other elements around the subject of light will be additional wow-factors.

While German and international Christmas carols can be presented live on the natural stage below the falls, the visitors can learn more about traditional Black Forest handicraft such as wood carving, straw weaving and painting clock shields by watching the artisans at work.

The air is filled by the smells of typical Christmas delights. Winterly instant photographs and a great variety of individual Christmas Magic gifts are souvenirs to take back home. Children can enjoy a ride on the merry-go-round or marvel at the "living manger". Another attraction for our young guests is the possibility to roast apples over a big camp fire. The clock pedlar or the organ grinders will be available at any time for snapshots for the private photo album.

The initiators of the event are Thomas Weisser and Rainer Huber, who had the idea for the Triberg Christmas Magic. Since it took place for the first time in 2004, this special Christmas event has already become something of an institution for holiday guests and locals from near and far alike. "An unforgettable experience which you shouldn't miss" - this was the feedback of visitors who were obviously thrilled by the fiery show and impressed by the countless Christmas lights.

Further information and impressions from the Triberg Christmas Magic can be found on: www.weihnachtszauber-triberg.de.

Gallows in Triberg

"It must have been almost a pleasure to die on the Triberg gallows".
(Stuttgart newspaper of 11.07.1962)
Gallows existed in the domain of Triberg already in 1349 at a particularly charming place, on the Kesselberg. Here where the frontiers of different municipalities meet, executions took place until 1776. Today the gallows consist of two stone pillars supported by steel band, the wooden crossbeam does not exist anymore.
The gallows are to be found on the Kesselberg near the district road Schonach-Schönwald-Villingen at the turning in direction S. Georgen and Furtwangen-Rohrbach.

Pilgrimage Church "Maria in der Tanne" in Triberg

Pilgrimage in Triberg has its origins in 1644. In this year, the little Barbara Franz was cured from an eye disease by the water from a nearby spring. Only one year later there was another miracle: the tailor Friedrich Schwab was healed from his leprosy by washing with the water from the spring. Out of gratitude, he placed a small statue of Mary in the cavity of a fir tree – hence the name of the church
Maria in der Tanne, which means Mary in the fir tree. But the statue was forgotten for a long time until 3 soldiers from Tyrol rediscovered it. Their attention had been drawn to it by lovely singing. First a wooden chapel and later a simple stone chapel were built before the present pilgrimage church was constructed in 1705. Special highlights are the high altar and the pulpit created by the sculptor Schupp from Villingen.
At an idyllic place next to the church, there is the sexton's lodge. The small timbered house is the second oldest building in Triberg and dates from 1697. It accommodated not only the sexton, but also the monk and the priest. In 1913, the municipality of Triberg bought the small house and set up the first local heritage museum here. In 1940 it became again property of the church. In the course of some renovation works, even a treasure was found here. You would like to know what that was? Well, then visit the sexton's lodge and you will learn it!

The Centre of Cuckoo Clocks – Triberg

Cuckoo clocks have a long tradition in Triberg! Carvers, clock makers and clock shops are characteristic for the town. It is for good reason that the German Clock Route (total length: 320 km) passes through Triberg: shopping and visiting the workshops of the carvers or clock makers – you won't feel the hours ticking away!

Baroque Church in Schonach

The parish of Schonach was founded by the barons of Althornberg in 1150. Not only Schonach, but also Triberg, Niederwasser, Nussbach and Gremmelsbach belonged to it.
The first little church could have been built in Schonach after the year 1100. The relics of this Romanesque church are supposed to lie under today's squire.
The building as we see it today was created between 1912 and 1914 according to the plans of inspector Jakob Jeblinger from the building authorities of the archdiocese Freiburg.

The renovation works which started in 1989 were completed in 1990. The font of 1624 and the altar painting of 1747/48 belong to oldest religious objects.

Nature Reserve Rohrhardsberg

The Rohrhardsberg with its about 1,300 hectares is a nature reserve for animals and plants as well as an area where many people come for skiing or hiking. From the Rohrhardsberg you have magnificent views of the Northern Black Forest, the Elz valley, the Simonswald valley, the Feldberg and the Vosges mountains.
The highest spot of Schonach is on Rohrhardsberg at 1,163 m above sea level.
The Schwedenschanze inn with its beautiful wood carvings is an ideal place to rest.

Langenwaldschanze in Schonach

The home ski jump of all Black Forest ski jump champions has a length of 92 m.
The landing slope incl. runout has a length of 220 m and the tower is 38 m high. The staircase up to the start consists of 210 steps.

Every year, major sporting events take place here, e.g. the Nordic Combined World Cup on the first weekend in January.
Being inhabitants of Schonach, Hans-Peter Pohl, Nordic Combined gold medallist of 1988, as well as Alexander Herr, team world champion of 2001, and Hansjörg Jäckle, who among other things won the gold medal in 1994 in Lillehammer and the silver medal in Nagano with the team, already jumped down this ski jump. In the next few years, the competition for the Black Forest Cup is likely to become very exciting, since our local champion Georg Hettich has joined the leading ranks with his silver medal at the Olympic games in 2002, the silver medal in the World Championship 2003 and the gold medal at the Olympic games in 2006.
Every Wednesday in summer from 14:00, there is the opportunity to have a closer look at the ski jump and its tower. In winter, visits are possible on request.

Cup Stone Trail in Schonach

An exceptionally large amount of so-called cup stones in a variety of forms is found in the municipality of Schonach. Natural monuments of this kind are known all over the world, but they are particularly frequent in Northern and Western Europe.
Although these stones have recently become a focus of scientific research, it has so far not been possible to find a generally recognized explanation for the origin and utilization of these cups.

What is meant by a cup stone is "a bowl-like hollow in stones formed by nature or modified by man". The hiking trail presented here does not have the intention to provide an explanation. Each rock biotope as such represents a unique wonder of nature. What is intended, however, is to stimulate the hikers' imagination so that everybody can form his or her own picture.

Natural Adventure Trail in Schonach

In Schonach, children are given the opportunity to get a special junior forester training in about 2 hours. Our woodpecker Hansi Holzknecht will guide them on their way. Here you can see the Black Forest from a different, mostly unknown, point of view. Or did you know how far foxes can jump?
If all questions are answered correctly, you will be rewarded with a "junior forester certificate". For further information contact the Tourist Information office Schonach.

Historic Trail in Furtwangen - Neukirch

The Historic Trail in Furtwangen - Neukirch, completed at the beginning of August 2004, is a circular trail of 6.5 km length where 16 information boards provide information on things long past and almost forgotten regarding history, landscape and the changes it has undergone, forestry and on the particularities of nature to be found along the path.

Besides some anecdotes that had never been written down before, the new trail also tries to make old pictures and postcards from numerous private collections accessible to the public.

The trail starts at the Schwarzwaldhalle in Neukirch, where a sufficient number of parking places is available. It passes via the Brend in Neukirch and the Friedrichsfelsen up to the barbecue site near the farmhouse Behahof. Then the trail leads uphill, through the Brennersloch and up to the mill Lochmühle, passes the country inn 'Ochsen' until it ends again at the Schwarzwaldhalle with its café. Sturdy shoes and sure-footedness are imperative!
The "working group landscape" wishes all hikers a lot of fun and hopes that the trail is accepted and enjoyed by locals and tourists and provides some food for thought about the way we deal with our landscape, history and environment.
