German
Clock Route
Tourist-Information
Bahnhof Schwenningen
D-78054 Villingen-Schwenningen
info@deutsche-uhrenstrasse.de
www.deutsche-uhrenstrasse.de
The German Clock Route covers a distance of 320 kilometres and runs
through the most beautiful holiday regions of the Black Forest and
the Baar. Along the route, you will find many interesting museums
and sights where clocks play a major part. Some clock factories will
even allow you a glimpse into their production.
Since the first wooden "Waaguhr" clock was manufactured in Waldau
around the year 1667, the clock has undergone many interesting
changes. Trumpeter and flute clocks, picture and frame clocks, time
clocks, regulators and double-bell alarm clocks, so-called
"Schottenuhren" and many other pieces up to the modern quartz and
radio-controlled clocks were and are produced here. In 1840, the
Black Forest clock makers had already subsidiaries in 4 continents
and 23 countries. There were companies which took the clocks as far
as China, Russia, Turkey and America. 600,000 clocks were produced
in the Black Forest in the year 1845, in 1989 the production quota
amounted to 60 million clocks and clockworks. About 12,000 people
were working in the clock factories along the German Clock Route.
The charm of Black Forest farmhouses with their shingle roofs, the
clear rivers with their trout, the lush meadows and dark-green woods
will be your companions on this route. You shouldn’t miss a meal
with Black Forest ham, nourishing bread, kirsch and plum brandy or
the famous Black Forest cherry tart. Take your time on the Clock
Route! |
